The Souls of Chaos were four ancient dungeons bounding with treasure scattered around the world blocked off by monoliths depicted one of the Four Fiends. After each Fiend was defeated by the Warriors of Light, one of the dungeons was unlocked.
The Earthgift Shrine north of Cornelia was opened after the Warriors of Light destroyed the Lich. It was guarded by Ahriman, Cerberus, Echidna and the Two-Headed Dragon.
The Hellfire Chasm, located on one of the Cardian Islands, was opened after the heroes defeated Marilith. It was once the proving ground for would-be kings of Elfheim until the Fiends arrived. It was guarded by Barbariccia, Cagnazzo, Rubicante and Scarmiglione.
The Lifespring Grotto, found at the bottom of a whirlpool west of the Aldean Sea, was opened after the Warriors of Light destroyed the Kraken. The Grotto was once a place where men and Mermaids who fell in love could live together in peace, but was closed off when the Kraken invaded. It was guarded by Atomos, Gilgamesh, Omega and Shinryu.
The Whisperwind Cove, found in the maze of rivers north of Crescent Lake, was opened after the Warriors defeated Tiamat. The ancient ancestors of the Lufenians entrusted many treasures to its depths before the Fiend of Wind blocked access to its interiors. It was guarded by Death Gaze, Orthros, Typhon and the Phantom Train.
After completing the puzzles and vanquishing the guardians of the Souls of Chaos, the Warriors of Light were prepared to take on the challenge of the ultimate evil controlling the Four Fiends two thousand years in the past.

NAME ORIGIN
Souls are the spiritual nature of humans, regarded as immortal, seperated from the body at death. The word comes from the Old English sawol meaning "spiritual and emotional part of a person, animate existence". In addition to being the final boss of Final Fantasy, Chaos was a Greek god, the personification of the disorder and formless matter said to exist before the universe. The word comes from the Greek word khaos, meaning "abyss".
