Soul of Rebirth is the name of the bonus quest in Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls and Final Fantasy II 20th Anniversary Edition. It can be accessed at the title menu after defeating Emperor Mateus in the game's main quest.
The story of Soul of Rebirth follows Minwu, Prince Scott, Josef and Ricard Highwind following their untimely deaths in the war against the Palamecian Empire. They awaken in the strange cave of Raqia, believing themselves to actually be in Jade, the passage to Hell. Exploring their new surroundings, they eventually make their way to the makeshift town of Machanon where they learn that all inhabitants of the village had fallen in battle against the Empire, including Cid the Airship pilot. Minwu and the others pledge to discover the reason they have all found themselves in this place, giving the townspeople hope.
Machanon contains portals which transports the heroes to Raqia, the Chamber of the Seal and Arubboth. The Chamber of the Seal resembles the Mysidian Tower where Minwu originally lost his life, and it is here that Minwu overcomes Ultima Weapon and acquires the powerful White Magic spell Ultima. The heroes then battle through the crystalline palace of Arubboth, where they encounter the "light side" of Emperor Mateus. Following his death at the hands of Firion and his friends, Mateus' soul split in two: his dark half descending to Hell and his light half ascending to Arubboth, the palace of the heavens. Mateus summoned the souls of those who had perished fighting against his Empire in hopes of earning their forgiveness and ruling over them in the afterlife. However, the heroes refuse to capitulate to Mateus and the enraged Emperor attacks them. Coinciding with Firion and his friends battle against Mateus' dark side in Pandaemonium, Minwu and the fallen heroes defeat the light half of the Emperor's soul, finally destroying the evil legacy of Emperor Mateus and restoring peace to the world. Watching over their loved ones, the souls of Minwu, Scott, Josef and Ricard are finally able to rest in peace.
