NAME ORIGIN
A pyrolisk is an enemy from the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game which can cause creatures to burst into flame simply by looking at them. According to the game's Monstrous Manual, "the pyrolisk is virtually identical to the cockatrice except for the single red feather in its tail and the reddish cast of its wings". The origin of the word is a combination of pyro and basilisk, another name for the cockatrice. Pyro is a prefix denoting an association with fire. The prefix comes from the Greek word for fire, pyr. A basilisk is a creature found in classical mythology, a serpent or lizard with the ability to kill with its breath or glance. There is also a tropical American lizard named the basilisk. The name comes from the Greek word basilískos meaning "little king", so named because of a small crest resembling a crown atop the basilisk's head.
In the original NES release, this enemy's name was mistranslatd as Perilisk.
