FINAL FANTASY II :: CHARACTERS

PRONUNCIATION: PRIN-ses HIL-duh
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: ヒルダ
ORIGINS NAME: Princess Hilda
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Princess Hilda
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Princess Hilda

    Princess Hilda was the daughter of the King of Fynn and one of the leaders of the Wild Rose Rebellion. In love with the valiant Prince Scott of Kashuan, she would have taken his hand in marriage had the evil Palamecian Empire not invaded Fynn and drove out the forces of the Rebellion. She fled with her father and the Rebel army to the nearby town of Altair where they regrouped at the Rebel Hideout. The King had been wounded by an arrow during their escape and was bedridden. He appointed Hilda to lead the Rebellion as regent in his absence.
    While fleeing Fynn, some Rebel soldiers found three orphans who had been beaten by a group of Imperial Black Knights. They rescued the unconscious youths and took them back to Altair where Hilda ordered Minwu, her loyal White Wizard, to help tend to their wounds. The three orphans, Firion, Maria and Guy, petitioned Hilda to allow them to join the Rebel army but she refused, believing it to be too dangerous for the youths. She revealed to them the Rebel password, Wild Rose, and permitted them to stay in Altair where they would be safe from the Empire. Firion and his friends, determined to prove their worth to Hilda and also to find the whereabouts of their missing companion, Leon, journeyed to their occupied home of Fynn where they snuck past the Imperial guards and eventually found Prince Scott, gravely injured and hiding in the store room of the Fynn Pub. He gave the heroes his Ring along with a message to pass on to Hilda, but he relented knowing that it would only bring her pain. Firion and his companions brought the Ring back to Hilda who permitted them to join the Rebellion.
    Now that they had earned her trust, Hilda sent the heroes on a mission to secure the Empire's cache of Mythril, the magical metal that the Imperial armor and weaponry was forged from. She had lost contact with her ally, Josef, who was searching for the source of the Empire's Mythril around Salamand. Firion and his friends journeyed to Salamand and worked with Josef to discover the mines beneath Semitt Falls, recovering Mythril ore to bring back to the Wild Rose Rebellion.
    Impressed with the valiant efforts of Firion and his allies, the Princess sent them to Kashuan Keep, the resting place of the Sunfire, a mythical fire that powered the engines of Airships. The Rebels planned to overload the engines of the Empire's recently completed warship, the Dreadnought, before it could cause further damage. Hilda planned to meet the heroes at the Keep and asked Cid, the famous pilot of the world's only other Airship, to fly her to Kashuan. However, as they approached the Keep they were ambushed by the Dreadnought and were captured.
    Firion, Maria, Guy and Prince Gordon tracked the Dreadnought to its refueling station north of Fynn and infiltrated the great warship by using the Pass they had acquired earlier in the Bafsk Cave. Sneaking through the ship, they found Cid and Hilda held prisoner in the brig. They escaped back to the Airship, while the heroes sabotaged the Dreadnought's engines, dropping the Sunfire into the giant turbines creating a chain reaction that destroyed the ship from the inside. Aboard the Airship, Cid, Hilda and the heroes returned to the Rebel base at Altair. Little did they know that the Hilda they rescued was in reality a duplicitous Lamia Queen in disguise.
    Later, the imposter Hilda revealed her true form when she tried to seduce Firion. Leila, secretly watching from afar, burst into the bedchamber along with Maria and Guy and the heroes defeated the snake-tailed seductress and soon learned that the real Hilda was being held captive at the Coliseum in Palamecia. A tournament was being held with Hilda as the grand prize, presided over by Emperor Mateus himself. Gordon offered to accompany the heroes to the great arena, and when they arrived they were thrown into battle against a Behemoth. They prevailed over the massive beast and approached the Emperor's throne, but were ambushed and thrown into the Coliseum's dungeons. With the timely arrival of their ally, Paul, the heroes were able to escape and soon found Hilda's cell. Gordon escorted the Princess out of the Coliseum while Firion and his friends held the Imperial forces at bay.
    Back at Altair, Hilda and Gordon raised the Rebel army and prepared for an all out attack to liberate Fynn from the Imperial forces. Pitching Camp outside the lake surrounding Fynn, Hilda and Gordon made plans to drive out the Imperial troops from the city while Firion, Maria, Guy and Leila would sneak into Castle Fynn and take out the castellan, the demon Gottos. The plan was a success and Fynn was freed from the Empire, as Hilda and Gordon took the throne at Castle Fynn. She would continue to lead the Rebellion from Castle Fynn as Firion and his allies took the fight to Emperor Mateus himself.
    After Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon finally destroyed Mateus in an epic showdown atop the infernal palace of Hell, Pandaemonium, Hilda and Gordon welcomed the heroes back to Fynn. They pledged to help rebuild the lands devastated by the Empire, creating a kingdom even fairer than the old.
