FINAL FANTASY II :: CHARACTERS

PRONUNCIATION: NEL-ee
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: Unknown
ORIGINS NAME: Molly
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Nelly
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Nelly

    Nelly was the beloved daughter of Josef, Princess Hilda's contact in the snowy northern village of Salamand. At the urging of Princess Hilda, Josef began searching for the source of the Palamecian Empire's Mythril, with which they forged weapons to overthrow the kingdom of Fynn. However, when Josef got too close to discovering the Empire's stash of the magical metal, the dastardly General Borghen kidnapped Nelly and the townsfolk of Salamand and held them captive in the murky caverns behind Semitt Falls, threatening Josef to stay away. Firion, Maria, Guy and Minwu, acting on Hilda's orders, met with the unresponsive Josef in his House in Salamand. Josef commanded Firion and his allies to rescue the citizens of Salamand to prove their loyalties. Trudging through the cavern, they found the townspeople, along with Paul the thief and Nelly, among the captives.
    Nelly returned home to her father, who gratefully welcomed the heroes and revealed to them that the caves behind Semitt Falls used to be an old Mythril mine, and the deepest parts of the cave still had some Mythril deposits. Firion and his friends went on to defeat the Empire's forces and returned to Altair with the Mythril ore.
    Nelly stayed at home in Salamand later when her father reunited with Firion and his allies. However, Josef met his fate in a trap sprung by the villainous Borghen and was crushed beneath a massive boulder. A woman harboring a unrequited love for Josef pledged to look after Nelly in Josef's place.
    It was the memory of his beloved daughter that spurred Josef in the afterlife to resist the "light half" of Emperor Mateus' offer for eternal life in Arubboth, just as Firion and his friends were battling the "dark half" of Mateus' soul in Pandaemonium. Following the Emperor's defeat, Nelly decided to move to Fynn and serve Princess Hilda under the watchful gaze of her father's spirit.

GAME INFO
    Nelly is first encountered on B3 of Semitt Falls along with Paul and the townspeople of Salamand. Speaking to Paul will free the prisoners and Nelly will remain in Josef's House in Salamand for the remainder of the game.

NAME ORIGIN
    Nelly is a nickname for the name Nell, which derives from a diminutive form of the name Helen that originated during the Middle Ages. It may have arisen from the medieval affectionate phrase "mine El" which was later reinterpreted as "my Nel".
