NAME ORIGIN
A mine is an explosive device used to destroy enemy personnel, shipping, fortifications or equipment, often placed in a concealed position and designed to be detonated by contact, proximity or a time fuse. The word comes from the Irish mein meaning "ore, mine" referring to the practice of tunneling under enemy fortifications to blow them up.
