ORIGINS NAME: Mermaid
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Mermaid
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Mermaid

The Mermaids were a friendly race of half-woman, half-fish who lived in the Sunken Shrine off the coast of Onrac and the undersea village of Seahold in the Lifespring Grotto. Most Mermaids had pink scales, although a few had green and blue. The Lifespring Grotto was a place where Mermaids and men who fell in love could live together in peace. The group of Mermaids living in the Sunken Shrine were taken hostage by the Fiend of Water, the Kraken, when he attacked and drained the Water Crystal. If the Water Crystal was not restored, they would turn to sea foam and drift away.
The Warriors of Light, with the use of magical Oxyale, traveled to the Sunken Shrine and battled the Kraken. They defeated the tentacled Fiend and restored the light of the Water Crystal. The Mermaids later helped the heroes after the mad swordsman Gilgamesh arrived in Seahold. He was on a search for the legendary sword Excalibur, believing it had washed up in the underwater village. However, the sword he found was the imitation Excalipur. The Mermaids directed the Warriors of Light to his location, where he challenged them to a battle and ultimately lost.

NAME ORIGIN
A mermaid is a female sea creature, having the head, torso and arms of a woman and the tail of a fish. Tales of mermaids are found in many cultures, and the first stories seem to originate in Assyria around 1000 B.C. The word comes from a compound of mere meaning "sea" in Old English and maid, a young woman.
