NAME ORIGIN
Manta rays are the largest species of ray, measuring from 2 to 24 feet across. They belong to the species Manta birostris. The name comes from the Spanish word manta meaning "blanket" due to its blanket-like shape. A ray is a fish of the order Rajiformes or Batoidei, adapted for life on the sea bottom, having a flattened body, enlarged pectoral fins and gills on its underside. The word comes from the Latin word raia.
