ORIGINS NAME: Leviathan

ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Leviathan

Leviathan was a titanic sea serpent that acted as guardian of the Mysidian Tower. He was summoned to the surface by anyone carrying a Crystal Rod as a final defense to keep the Ultima Tome, sealed away inside the Tower, from falling into the hands of evil. Many sailors carrying Crystal Rods found themselves drawn into a vast whirlpool and swallowed whole by Leviathan. Many smaller sea creatures lived inside Leviathan's stomach, feeding off those consumed by the beast.
After Firion, Maria, Guy and Leila acquired a Crystal Rod from the Cave of Mysidia, their Ship was swallowed whole by Leviathan. Leila was thrown overboard, but Firion, Maria and Guy found themselves in the creature's gullet. Making their way through the serpent's innards, they encountered a small group of people who had also been swallowed by Leviathan. It was here that they met Ricard Highwind, the last surviving Dragoon. He had set sail for the Mysidian Tower, hoping to bring the Ultima Tome back to his homeland Deist to fight back against the Palamecian Empire, but his ship was swallowed by Leviathan. He joined the heroes and together they fought their way to Leviathan's mouth, where they found their Ship guarded by a fearsome Roundworm. With Ricard's help, the heroes felled the savage worm and boarded the Ship, escaping through Leviathan's teeth when he opened his mouth for air.

GAME INFO
Leviathan is never seen in full during the game, but its insides are the setting for a three-floor dungeon. Ricard Highwind joins the party on Leviathan's second floor.

NAME ORIGIN
Leviathan is a monstrous sea creature referred to in the Bible. It first appears in the Book of Job 3:8. According to Jewish tradition, Leviathan was created on the fifth day of Creation. Some scholars believe that Leviathan may refer to a Nile crocodile or a whale. The name comes from the Hebrew liwyatan, which means "twisted, coiled".
