FINAL FANTASY II :: CHARACTERS

PRONUNCIATION: keyn
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: Unknown
ORIGINS NAME: Not named
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Kain
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Kain

    Kain was the son of the late Dragoon, Phillip his wife, Elina. After the Palamecian Empire invaded the island of Deist and wiped out the Dragoons and their Wyverns, Kain and Elina stayed behind in Castle Deist to care for the last surviving Wyvern. Unfortunately, they did not possess a Dragoon's Pendant and could not speak the Wyvern's language. When Firion and his allies arrived at Castle Deist on the orders of the King of Fynn, Kain ran from the heroes, believing them to be soldiers of the Empire. Following the young boy, they found his mother and ailing Wyvern. Elina urged them to search Deist Cavern for a Pendant so they could communicate with the Wyvern. The heroes found a Pendant on the corpse of a fallen Dragoon and brought it back to the Castle. The dying Wyvern gave the heroes the last hope for its race, the final remaining Wyvern Egg, which needed to be submerged in the waters of the Life Spring at the bottom of Deist Cavern. Elina and Kain continued to care for the Wyvern until it sighed its last breath shortly after Firion and his friends accomplished their task. After Ricard Highwind, the last of the Dragoons and friend of Elina, joined Firion and his allies in their quest, the heroes made a short stop at Castle Deist to reunite the old friends. Ricard pledged to avenge the death of Phillip and the other fallen Dragoons, as well as to raise Kain to be a Dragoon when he returned from battle. They bid farewell, but Ricard later fell in combat against the reborn Emperor Mateus. Elina and Kain stayed at Castle Deist until the heroes returned to inform them of Ricard's death at the hands of the Emperor. Elina and Kain left Castle Deist and journeyed to Fynn where they hoped to build a new life and Kain could train to be a true Dragoon knight with his very own Wyvern.

GAME INFO
    Kain and Elina are found on the second floor of Castle Deist.

ADDITIONAL INFO
    Kain was not named in the original Final Fantasy II or the Final Fantasy Origins remake. He was named in Dawn of Souls, as a reference to Kain Highwind, the Dragoon hero from Final Fantasy IV. Additionally, in the Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy IV, it is told that Kain Highwind's father, Richard, died fighting an evil empire, a reference to Ricard Highwind from Final Fantasy II.

NAME ORIGIN
    Kain is an alternate spelling of the name Cain. Cain was the first son of Adam and Eve in the Biblical Book of Genesis. He was the first person to commit murder when he killed his brother, Abel, after God accepted Abel's offering instead of his. The word comes from the Hebrew Qayin meaning "acquired".
