DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Hell
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Hell

Hell was the place where the souls of those who committed grave sins were sentenced after death. It was populated by horrific monsters, and ruled over from the crystalline palace Pandaemonium. The only way to reach Hell from the land of the living was by passing through the Jade Passage. Many ages ago, the Jade Passage appeared east of Mysidia, along with the infernal fortress of Pandaemonium, and monsters poured out from the underworld, but the mages of the past used the powerful White Magic spell Ultima to keep the beasts at bay and used its immense power to banish the Passage and the castle back to Hell.
Following his death at the hands of Firion, Maria, Guy and Ricard Highwind, the evil Emperor Mateus' soul plummeted to Hell. While there, he used his dark powers usurp control and become the lord of Hell. His powers intensified and he returned to life, summoning the Jade Passage to appear in the real world and transforming Castle Palamecia into Pandaemonium. The heroes fought through the Emperor's minions and reached Pandaemonium through the Jade Passage. They defeated Mateus once and for all, closing the gateway to Hell and restoring peace to the world.

GAME INFO
Hell itself is never seen in the game, but areas of it, including the Jade Passage and Pandaemonium, are traveled through.

NAME ORIGIN
Hell is the place or state of punishment for the wicked after death in most religions. The word derives from the Norse goddess Hel, whose name means "one who covers up or hides something". She was the daughter of Loki, and ruled over the souls of the evil dead in Niflheim, the lowest of all the worlds in Norse mythology.
