PRONUNCIATION: EM-per-er ma-TE-uhs
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: パラメキア皇帝
ORIGINS NAME: Emperor
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Emperor
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Emperor

Emperor Mateus was the evil ruler of the Palamecian Empire. He used dark magic to summon forth monsters from the underworld and set out on a campaign of world domination. The Wild Rose Rebellion, centered in the kingdom of Fynn, arose to thwart his evil quest, but the Emperor sent his forces to decimate the Rebel kingdom, thanks in part to the treacherous Count Borghen. His armies subjugated the town of Bafsk and wiped out the brave Dragoons of Deist. From his throne room at Castle Palamecia, he directed his soldiers in their conquests.
During the invasion of Fynn, four orphaned youths named Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon were attacked by Black Knights serving the Emperor as they fled the besieged kingdom. They were taken back to Altair by the Rebels, but Leon was captured by Imperial soldiers. He was hypnotized by Mateus' dark power and appointed to the Emperor's right hand as the Dark Knight. Firion, Maria and Guy, meanwhile, joined the Wild Rose Rebellion and began to fight back against the Empire. They stole the Empire's souce of the legendary metal Mythril from the caves of Semitt Falls in order to craft stronger weapons for the Rebellion. To compensate for this theft and the heavy losses his forces sustained in the invasion of Fynn, Mateus ordered construction of a massive warship called the Dreadnought in Bafsk. He sent the Dark Knight to enslave the town's populace and hypnotize them into working tirelessly to construct the terrible battleship. The warship lifted off from Bafsk and laid waste to the towns of Paloom, Poft, Gatrea and Altair. The heroes plotted to sabotage the Dreadnought by overloading its engines with the mythical Sunfire. After the warship abducted Princess Hilda and Cid aboard the Airship, Firion and his friends snuck aboard the Dreadnought when it touched down for repairs north of Fynn. They rescued the Princess and Cid before dropping the Sunfire into the craft's enormous engines, causing a critical meltdown which destroyed the Dreadnought.
However, the Princess they rescued was really a Lamia Queen in disguise. The true Princess Hilda was taken back to Palamecia and held in the prisons beneath the Coliseum. Emperor Mateus declared that the victor of a tournament held in the Coliseum could claim the Princess as the prize. Firion, Maria, Guy and Prince Gordon trekked across the Palamecian Desert to the great arena and faced the Emperor's pet Behemoth as Mateus watched over from his throne. The heroes slew the beast in combat, and the Emperor invited the heroes to claim their reward. However, he vanished as they approached and instead the Dark Knight appeared and threw them into the Coliseum's prison. The heroes escaped with Hilda and returned to Fynn. To defeat the Emperor, Princess Hilda ordered Firion and his friends to acquire the powerful White Magic spell Ultima from the Mysidian Tower. The heroes completed the tasks and trials necessary to enter the Tower and battled to the top where they found the legendary magic. Returning to Fynn, they found a kingdom terrorized by an unrelenting Cyclone. The Emperor had summoned this great whirlwind to destroy the towns loyal to the Rebellion, and now planned to demolish Fynn with its ravenous winds. Mateus controlled the Cyclone from a fortress suspended within. The heroes called forth the newly hatched Wyvern from the Life Spring in Deist Cavern by way of Castle Fynn's Mirror Chamber and the dragon flew them into the whirling winds of the Cyclone. They fought their way to Mateus' throne room and the Emperor sent his guards to attack the heroes. They disposed of these enemies and Mateus decided to grant them a great honor, by killing them himself. Mateus, flanked by Royal Guards and a monstrous Wood Golem, fell in battle to the heroes and his dark soul plummeted to Hell.
Firion and his friends returned to Fynn to celebrate their victory over the Emperor, but their celebration was short lived. The Dark Knight, Leon, declared himself the new emperor at Castle Palamecia. Using Cid's Airship, the heroes flew to the Castle and attempted to talk sense into Leon. As they confronted him in the Castle's throne room, a foul creature suddenly appeared. It was Mateus, risen from Hell with new levels of power. Ricard Highwind urged Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon to escape atop his Wyvern while he stayed behind to battle the risen Emperor to the death. The heroes fled the Castle as Ricard charged into combat. Slaying Ricard, Mateus used his dark magic to transform Castle Palamecia into Pandaemonium, the infernal palace of Hell.
Leon, realizing that as long as Mateus lived, many more innocents would die, joined forces with the Rebellion. Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon traveled to the newly risen Jade Passage east of Mysidia. The Jade Passage linked the mortal world with the underworld and was the only way to enter Pandaemonium. The heroes fought their way through the underground cavern and found the entrance to Pandaemonium. They battled through the crystalline fortress, defeating the Emperor's foul minions. They reached the reborn Mateus on Pandaemonium's top floor and in a titanic battle, finally destroyed the evil warlord.
Meanwhile, as the heroes battled the Emperor's dark soul in Pandaemonium, their fallen comrades, Minwu, Josef, Ricard Highwind and Prince Scott were battling the Emperor's "light half" in the palace of the heavens, Arubboth. When he was killed by Firion and his friends in the Cyclone, Mateus' soul split in two. His dark half was sent to Hell, while his light half ascended to Arubboth. However, even his light half was pure evil and he used his dark magic to take over the afterlife and plagued the souls of the dead with his monstrous underlings. He summoned the souls of those who fell in battle against him to ask for their forgiveness and to live under his command for all eternity. Minwu, Josef, Ricard and Scott refused his request and Mateus declared that in lieu of eternal life, he would give them eternal suffering. The fallen heroes triumphed over Mateus in a climactic showdown, and with both halves of his soul destroyed, the legacy of Emperor Mateus was finally ended.

Emperor Mateus Palamecia's final form in Pandaemonium is one of six enemy sprites redrawn for the Final Fantasy Origins release of Final Fantasy II. The other enemy sprites that were redrawn were Astaroth, Coeurl, Magician, Werepanther and Wizard.
Emperor Mateus was one of the non-player characters to receive portrait sprites in the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary releases of Final Fantasy II. The others were Cid, the Dark Knight, General Borghen, Paul, Princess Hilda and Zombie Borghen.
The Emperor's first name, Mateus, is never revealed in the course of the game, Final Fantasy II. It is first mentioned in the Japanese novelization of the game, ファイナルファンタジーII 夢魔の迷宮 (translated as Final Fantasy II Nightmare's Labyrinth), by Kenji Terada, one of the original writers of the game.

NAME ORIGIN
An emperor is a male sovereign or supreme ruler of an empire. The word comes from the Latin imperiator meaning "commander" and was originally a title conferred by vote of the Roman army on a successful general. The Roman Senate later voted to name Julius Caesar and his successors imperiator. Mateus is the Portuguese form of the name Matthew, which derives from the Hebrew name Mattityahu, meaning "Gift of Yahweh".
