FINAL FANTASY I :: LOCATIONS :: TOWNS

PRONUNCIATION: ELF-hahym
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: エルフのまち
NES NAME: ElfLand
ORIGINS NAME: Elfheim
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Elfheim
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Elfheim

    Elfheim was a small kingdom nestled in a forest south of the Aldean Sea. Inhabited by the diminutive Elves and ruled by the benevolent Elf Prince, it was also known for its sages and magic. Elfheim was a peaceful land until the evil Dark Elf Astos attacked and cursed the Prince. The beleaguered kingdom was saved after the Warriors of Light defeated Astos and awakened the sleeping Prince.

GAME INFO
    Elfheim can only be reached after acquiring Bikke's Ship and sailing south from Pravoka. Elfheim also features two Black Magic and White Magic Shops, each selling Level 3 and Level 4 spells.

NAME ORIGIN
    Elfheim comes from the land of Álfheim in Norse mythology. It was both the name of the supernatural world where Elves lived, as well as an ancient kingdom in the Swedish province Bohuslän whose ancestors claimed to be descended from Elves. Elves are mythical creatures found in Northern European folklore. Most depictions are of small, sprite-like creatures with magical powers. However, some interpretations, such as J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, depict Elves as human-like magical beings. The word comes from the Old English ælf. Heim is the Germanic equivalent of the word "home". It is commonly found in German and Norwegian place names such as Mannheim and Trondheim.
    In the original NES release, this town bore the generic name ElfLand.
