NAME ORIGIN
Earth is the name given to soil and dirt, the dry surface matter of our planet. It is one of the four classical elements present in the old world mythologies. The word comes from the Old English word eorthe. Medusa was the name of a monstrous female from Greek mythology. She was one of the three Gorgons. Her hair was a mass of living snakes and anyone who gazed upon her would be instantly turned to stone. The hero Perseus defeated her and beheaded her, and from her severed neck sprang forth the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor. The concept of an "earth medusa" seems to be an invention of Square, and has no basis in folklore or mythology. If anyone has further information, please feel free to contact the Webmaster.
In the original NES release, this monster was known as GrMedusa which was an abbreviation for Green Medusa because of the color of the sprite.
