Uttering the word "Dragoons" to the mysterious seal in the Arcane Labyrinth, Firion and his friends were transported to a mysterious cavern haunted by the spirits of three evil Dragoons named Maya, Orga and Vishuss. The three terrorized the villages of the world until a brave warrior, hired by the Laird of one of the villages, defeated them in battle. The spirit of the Laird also wandered around the cavern, still plagued by the dastardly Dragoons until Firion and his friends defeated them once more. The heroes took them down in the same order as the warrior did many years ago, finally putting their dark souls to rest. The grateful Laird then offered them clues about completing the tasks in the Arcane Labyrinth's "Wyverns" dungeon.

ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Dragoons

The Dragoons were a heroic group of noble knights from Deist who trained the native Wyverns to be their airborne mounts. They were formed by a knight named Haan, who traveled to Deist and cultivated a bond with the Wyverns over a period of thirty years. Dragoons possessed Pendants that allowed them to communicate with their Wyvern brothers. They kept the legendary sword Excalibur as their most treasured possession, handed down through their ranks. They were renowned world-wide for their strength and bravery.
Many ages ago, a rogue group of Dragoon brothers consisting of Maya, Orga and Vishuss terrorized towns and villages all over the world, flying atop their black Wyverns. However, when they wreaked havoc on one particular town, they were met by a great warrior hired by the town's Laird. The warrior defeated Maya and Orga, but Vishuss snuck away to the Laird's home and murdered him. The warrior avenged the fallen Laird and put Vishuss to death, saving the world from their reign of terror.
Shortly before the invasion of Fynn, the evil Emperor Mateus, fearing the might of the Dragoons, sent his agents to poison the water supply of the Wyverns. With the Wyverns falling prey to the poison, the Palamecian Empire decimated the remaining Dragoons. Ricard Highwind, one of the last surviving Dragoons, set sail for the Mysidian Tower to recover the Ultima Tome and use it against the Empire, but his ship was swallowed whole by the Tower's guardian, the great sea serpent Leviathan. Back at Deist, all that remained of the mighty dragon knights were Elina and Kain, the wife and child of the late Dragoon Phillip. They stayed behind at Castle Deist to care for the last surviving Wyvern, who was slowly falling victim to the Empire's poison.
On his deathbed, the King of Fynn ordered Firion and his allies to journey to Deist and try to enlist any surviving Dragoons in the fight against the Empire. The heroes discovered Elina, Kain and the ailing Wyvern in Castle Deist. Elina urged the heroes to search Deist Cavern for a Pendant so that they could communicate with the Wyvern. Securing a Pendant from the corpse of a fallen Dragoon in the Cavern, the heroes returned to Castle Deist and spoke to the dying Wyvern who implored them to take the last hope for its race, the final remaining Wyvern Egg, to the Life Spring deep beneath Deist Cavern. Firion and his friends accomplished this task, defeating the feral Chimeras at the bottom of the Cavern and submerging the Wyvern Egg into the waters of the Life Spring. With this, the Wyvern breathed its last breath and perished.
Firion and his allies later traveled to the Mysidian Tower, hoping to secure the powerful White Magic spell Ultima to use against the Empire. Before they could reach the Tower, they were swallowed up by Leviathan. Inside the serpent's gullet, they met Ricard Highwind, the last of the Dragoons. Learning that his brethren had been destroyed by the Empire, Ricard joined the heroes and helped them escape from Leviathan. He continued with them on their journey, helping defeat Emperor Mateus in his Cyclone fortress and confronting the Dark Knight, Leon, in Castle Palamecia. Rising up from the depths of Hell, the Emperor challenged Leon's claim to the Imperial throne. Ricard urged Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon to escape atop his Wyvern while he held the reborn Emperor at bay. The heroes reluctantly retreated while Ricard battled the Emperor to his death. Learning of Ricard's brave sacrifice, the young Kain pledged to follow in Ricard's and his father's footsteps, becoming a Dragoon.

GAME INFO
The Dragoons are all destroyed at the start of the story, only Ricard Highwind survives the Palamecian Empire's attack.
