FINAL FANTASY II :: CHARACTERS :: VILLAINS

PRONUNCIATION: DOP-uhl-gang-er
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: Unknown
ORIGINS NAME: Doppelganger
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Doppelganger
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Doppelganger

The Doppelganger was a foul creature that blocked access to the deeper levels of the Cave of Mysidia. The creature took on the form of whoever approached it, becoming a mirror image of the trespasser. It was frozen in time by Firion placing the White Mask upon the Goddess statue found in the Mysidia Passage. When Firion, Maria, Guy and Leila reached the Doppelganger in the Cave of Mysidia, the creature became motionless due to the purity within Firion's heart. He then placed the Black Mask, recovered from the Tropical Island, upon the Doppelganger's face causing the mask and the creature to vanish.
Later, while exploring the Arcane Labyrinth, the heroes came across another Doppelganger when they spoke the word "Mask" to one of the mysterious seals found throughout the Labyrinth. They were transported to a strange castle where the Doppelganger mirrored their moves from across the chamber. The heroes tricked the creature into stepping on the chamber's red insignia, to which the impressed Doppelganger challenged them to forge their powers in the ice of the Tundra.

GAME INFO
The Doppelganger is encountered in the Cave of Mysidia, preventing access to the second floor. By placing the White Mask on the Goddess statue in the Mysidia Passage, the Doppelganger will freeze allowing the Black Mask to be placed on it, and will then vanish allowing access deeper into the Cave.
A second Doppelganger is found in the Arcane Labyrinth's Mask dungeon, where it mirrors the steps taken by the heroes. Manipulating the creature to step on the red insignia will result in it giving the key term "Tundra" to the heroes.

NAME ORIGIN
A doppelganger is a ghostly double of a living person that haunts its fleshy counterpart. Doppelgänger is a German word and literally translates to "double-walker".
