NAME ORIGIN
A diamond is a crystalline form of carbon, renowned for its hardness and used as a gemstone and as a cutting tool. The word comes from the Latin word adamas, which is also the root of the word "adamant". A shield is a broad piece of armor, carried apart from the body as a defense against swords, lances, arrows and other weapons. The word comes from the Old English word scield.
In the original NES release, the Diamond Shield was called the Opal Shield. Opal is a milky-white mineral used as a precious gemstone. The word comes from the Sanskrit upala-s meaning "precious stone".
