Deist was an island off the eastern coast of the Snow Plains. It was known as the ancestral homeland of the noble Dragoons and their mighty Wyvern mounts. Castle Deist in the center of the island was the fortress of the Dragoons, while the Wyverns lived in Deist Cavern, where the Wyvern Eggs were incubated in its magical Life Spring.
Many ages ago, a knight named Haan visited the island. For thirty years he lived amongst the Wyverns and cultivated a strong bond with the creatures. He became the first of a long lineage of Dragoons who fought proudly against injustice. However, the Dragoons were wiped out by Emperor Mateus during his bid for world conquest. The Emperor sent his agents to poison the drinking water of the Wyverns. Without their Wyvern brothers, the Dragoons were decimated by the Imperial troops. One of the last surviving Dragoons, Ricard Highwind, set sail for the Mysidian Tower, hoping to bring back the powerful White Magic spell Ultima to stop the Imperial onslaught, but his ship was swallowed whole by the Tower's guardian, the sea serpent Leviathan.
The King of Fynn requested Firion, Maria and Guy to travel to Deist and try to find any remnants of the Dragoons to help them in their fight against the Empire. To reach Deist, the heroes booked passage with Leila, a Ship captain in Paloom. Leila betrayed them on their voyage however, ordering her Pirate crew to turn on the heroes. Easily defeating the swashbucklers, Firion and his friends urged Leila to join their cause. Excitedly, she agreed and they set sail for Deist. Arriving on the forested island, the heroes entered the abandoned Castle Deist. Inside, they found a small boy, Kain, and his mother, Elina. Elina's husband, Phillip, was one of the last Dragoons killed by the Empire. The two remained behind in Castle Deist to care for the last surviving Wyvern, who was poisoned in the Empire's attack. However, she could not speak the Wyvern's language and asked the heroes to recover a Dragoon's Pendant from Deist Cavern to the north. With the Pendant, one could decipher the language of the Wyverns. Firion and his allies recovered a Pendant from the corpse of a fallen dragoon in the Cavern and brought it back to Castle Deist. The ailing Wyvern revealed the last hope for his race, an unhatched Wyvern Egg, which the dying dragon asked the heroes to submerge in the Life Spring at the bottom of Deist Cavern.
After Firion and his allies battled through Deist Cavern, defeating the monstrous Chimeras, and leaving the Wyvern Egg in the Life Spring, the poisoned Wyvern perished. Shortly after its death, Elina and Kain chose to leave the ruined castle. Before leaving, Elina bequeathed the most treasured possession of the Dragoons to Firion: the powerful sword, Excalibur.
