FINAL FANTASY II :: CHARACTERS :: VILLAINS

PRONUNCIATION: dahrk nahyt
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: Unknown
ORIGINS NAME: Dark Knight
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Dark Knight
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Dark Knight

The Dark Knight was a powerful soldier loyal to Emperor Mateus who appeared shortly after the invasion of Fynn. He used hypnosis to control the citizens of Bafsk and make them work tirelessly to construct the Palamecian Empire's fearsome warship, the Dreadnought. After Firion, Maria, Guy and Minwu stole the precious metal Mythril from the Empire's forces in the caves behind Semitt Falls, the Dark Knight was ordered to work behind the scenes to complete construction on the Dreadnought, allowing the treacherous General Borghen to act as overseer of the project. Trudging through the sewers of Bafsk Cave, Firion and his allies came face to face with the Dark Knight who revealed that the Dreadnought was fully operational. He and Borghen took flight aboard the warship, laying waste to the towns loyal to the Wild Rose Rebellion along the way.
The heroes were ordered by Princess Hilda to recover Sunfire from Kashuan Keep, which they could use to sabotage the engines of the Dreadnought by overloading them with the magical flames. Sneaking aboard the warship while it was docked for repairs north of Fynn, Firion and his friends dropped Sunfire, burning bright atop Egil's Torch, into the Dreadnought's engines, causing a critical meltdown. The Dark Knight arrived on the scene, witnessing the destruction and cursed the heroes. It was then that Maria recognized his voice, it was that of Leon, her brother who had fallen in battle against the Empire's Black Knights during the invasion of Fynn. Cast under the evil spell of the Emperor, he had become the Empire's highest ranking soldier. He escaped the Dreadnought's explosion and was later encountered by the heroes in the Coliseum. After slaying the Emperor's pet Behemoth, Firion and his allies approached Mateus' throne, but the Dark Knight appeared and captured them, ordering them to be locked away in the Coliseum's dungeon.
Firion and his allies escaped and soon after acquired the legendary Ultima Tome from the Mysidian Tower, just as the Emperor summoned a mighty Cyclone to devastate the Rebellion. The heroes entered the Cyclone, finding a fortress within where Mateus controlled its ravenous winds. In a spirited battle against the Emperor, the heroes prevailed and Mateus' soul plummeted to Hell. With the Emperor dead, the Dark Knight revealed his identity as Leon and claimed the Imperial throne. Firion, Maria, Guy and Ricard Highwind, flying aboard the recently deceased Cid's prized Airship, hurried to Castle Palamecia to confront Leon. Maria believed she could talk to her brother and bring him back to his senses. When the heroes arrived in the Emperor's throne room, they found Leon who seemed unrepentant. Suddenly, a huge demon materialized upon the Imperial throne. It was Mateus, who had gained incredible new powers in Hell and returned to the land of the living to reign anew. Ricard urged Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon to escape astride his Wyvern while he fought the Emperor to his death. Back at Castle Fynn, Firion and Maria beseeched Princess Hilda to allow Leon to accompany them to finally destroy the Emperor. Leon agreed, noting that as long Mateus still lived, many more would die. The heroes then set off for the Jade Passage, the only entrance to the infernal palace of Hell, Pandaemonium.

GAME INFO
The Dark Knight is encountered several times throughout Final Fantasy II. However, he is never fought in battle, and later joins the party as Leon.

ADDITIONAL INFO
In Dawn of Souls, the Dark Knight's portrait sprite is simply a darkned version of Leon's portrait. However, in the 20th Anniversary Edition, the Dark Knight's portrait features him wearing his helmet.
The Dark Knight was one of the non-player characters to receive portrait sprites in the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary releases of Final Fantasy II. The others were Cid, the three forms of Emperor Mateus, General Borghen, Paul, Princess Hilda and Zombie Borghen.
