FINAL FANTASY I :: MISCELLANEOUS :: CRYSTALS

PRONUNCIATION: KRIS-tls
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: クリスタル
NES NAME: Orbs
ORIGINS NAME: Crystals
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Crystals
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Crystals

    The Crystals were the four forces which held the world together, each focusing on a particular element. The Earth Crystal was located deep beneath the Cavern of Earth, the Fire Crystal was found within the cauldron of the Mount Gulg volcano, the Water Crystal was submerged beneath the waves in the Sunken Shrine and the Wind Crystal was suspended high above the clouds in the ancient Lufenian Flying Fortress.
    However, four hundred years ago, the Crystals' light began to diminish. The Four Fiends journeyed forward through time and began to drain the Crystals of their power, plunging the world into darkness. The prophet Lukahn foretold that when this happened, four young Warriors of Light would arrive and restore the power of the Crystals and bring peace and order back to the world.

GAME INFO
    The Crystals are central to the plot of Final Fantasy I. Each crystal is located in one of four elemental dungeons, guarded by a Fiend.

NAME ORIGIN
    A crystal is a clear, transparent mineral or glass resembling ice. The word comes from the Greek word krustallos meaning "ice". The Crystals are named after the four classical elements found in Greek and Roman philosophy and science: earth, fire, water and wind.
    In the original NES release, the Crystals were called Orbs. An orb is a sphere or globe shape. The word comes from the Latin word orbis meaning "circle" or "disk".
