PRONUNCIATION: KRIS-tl rod
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: クリスタルロッド
ORIGINS NAME: Crystal Rod
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Crystal Rod
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Crystal Rod

The Crystal Rod was a magical staff that was needed to break the seal preventing entrance to the Mysidian Tower. In order to keep the Ultima Tome from falling into the wrong hands, the mages of Mysidia created a complicated series of events necessary to unlock the Tower. First, the White Mask, found in the dungeons of Castle Fynn, was to be placed on a statute of a Goddess in the Mysidia Passage. After placing the Mask on the statue, the evil Doppelganger was raised in the murky Cave of Mysidia. Next, the Black Mask, found hidden in the caves of the remote Tropical Island, was to be placed on the Doppelganger by someone pure of heart. The Doppelganger would then vanish, allowing passage through the cavern where the Crystal Rod was kept.
Firion, Maria, Guy and Leila accomplished these trials, and found the Crystal Rod on the Cave of Mysidia's bottom-most level. With the Rod in hand, the heroes set sail across the sea to the Mysidian Tower, however the Mysidians placed one final obstacle to be sure that the Ultima Tome did not find its way into the clutches of evil. The Crystal Rod summoned the Tower's guardian: the titanic sea creature Leviathan, who created a huge whirlpool, swallowing the heroes' Ship whole. Leila managed to escape and find her way back to land, but Firion, Maria and Guy found themselves in Leviathan's gullet. In the great sea serpent's stomach, they encountered many other stranded adventurers who attempted to enter the Mysidian Tower, including the last of the Dragoons, Ricard Highwind. With Ricard's help, the heroes were able to make their way back to their Ship and sneak out of Leviathan's toothy maw. The heroes sailed to the Tower's island and held the Rod up to the tower, breaking the seal and allowing them to enter.
