FINAL FANTASY I :: LOCATIONS :: TOWNS

PRONUNCIATION: kawr-NEEL-yuh
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: コーネリアのまち
NES NAME: Coneria
ORIGINS NAME: Cornelia
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Cornelia
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Cornelia

    Cornelia, the city of dreams, was located on a peninsula at the northwestern waters of the Aldean Sea. Its high stone walls protected the townspeople from the monsters that haunted the woods around its perimeter, and its small port allowed access to the sea.
    The peaceful kingdom was home to the prophet Lukahn and the dancer Arylon, and was protected by a contingent of the Honor Guard. Cornelia was ruled by the King and Queen Jayne, who resided in Castle Cornelia which overlooked the city walls.
    Tragedy struck the kingdom when the evil knight Garland, formerly a soldier loyal to the crown, kidnapped the King's daughter, Princess Sarah, and took her to the ruins of the ancient Chaos Shrine north of Cornelia. Before leaving the city to travel to Crescent Lake, Lukahn foretold that the four Warriors of Light would arrive to save the kingdom.
    Soon enough, four travelers arrived with Crystals in hand just as the prophecy read. The King eagerly invited the Warriors in and explained the dire situation that had befallen Cornelia. The heroes agreed to rescue Sarah, and journeyed to the Chaos Shrine to confront Garland. Emerging victorious, the Warriors of Light returned the Princess to the safety of the Castle, and the grateful King rebuilt the Drawbridge north of Cornelia so that the heroes could continue on their journey.

NAME ORIGIN
    Cornelia is a female name, originating from the mother of Gaius and Tiberius Gracchus in the 2nd century B.C. The name comes from the Roman family name Cornelius which derives from the Latin word cornu meaning "horn".
    In the original NES release, Cornelia was mistranslated to Coneria. This most likely originated because of the confusion of L's and R's when translating from Japanese to English.
