ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: 闘技場
ORIGINS NAME: Coliseum
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Coliseum
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Coliseum

The Coliseum was an arena located in Palamecia. Within its gates, the evil Emperor Mateus kept his monstrous beast, the Behemoth. Shortly after the destruction of the Dreadnought, the Emperor held a tournament at the Coliseum with the prize being the kidnapped Princess Hilda of Fynn. Firion and his allies thought they had rescued the Princess from the Dreadnought, but in reality, they rescued a Lamia Queen masquerading as Hilda. The true Princess was being held in the prison beneath the Coliseum.
The heroes journeyed across the vast Palamecian Desert to reach the Coliseum and accepted the Emperor's challenge. Mateus let loose the fearsome Behemoth, but Firion, Maria, Guy and Prince Gordon slew the beast. The Emperor applauded the heroes for their effort, and allowed them a chance to challenge him. However, as they approached his throne the Emperor disappeared and the Dark Knight and his Imperial soldiers revealed themselves and imprisoned the heroes in the Coliseum's dungeon. However, the heroes were rescued from their jail cell by the timely arrival of Paul, the master thief. Paul picked the lock on their cell as thanks for rescuing him in the caves inside Semitt Falls. Firion and his friends battled through the Emperor's guards and came upon Hilda's cell. She was pleasantly surprised to see the once cowardly Prince Gordon. Firion urged Gordon to escape with Hilda while he, Maria and Guy drew the prison guards' attention. They fought their way out of the Coliseum and raced across the Palamecian Desert to make their way back to Altair, where they received word that Hilda and Gordon were planning an attack to reclaim Castle Fynn.

GAME INFO
The Coliseum is located just below Castle Palamecia in a small forest on the eastern side of the Palamecian Desert. It can be reached either by Ship and trekking across the Desert or by riding a Chocobo south from the Chocobo Forest in Kashuan.

NAME ORIGIN
A coliseum, also spelled colosseum, is a large amphitheater used for public sporting events, entertainment or public assemblies. The word comes from the Flavian Colosseum of Rome, built from around 70 to 80 A.D. by the Emperor Vespasian. It was a giant, round arena used most notably for gladiator fights. The name derives from the word colossus meaning "huge statue", referring to the Colossus of Nero statue built nearby.
