Living from around 1040-1099, he was a famous hero in the wars against the Moors before becoming a renowned mercenary and capturing the Spanish city of Valencia. An underling is a subordinate, usually one of a lowly rank. The word comes from the the Old Norse undir meaning "lower" and the Gothic -lings.
