ORIGINS NAME: Maximus
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Chimera Sphinx
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Chimera Sphinx

Chimera Sphinxes were ferocious fire-breathing winged beasts with the heads of a lion, a goat and a dragon. They prowled the hellish Jade Passage where their nauseous Bad Breath had the ability to petrify their victims.
While exploring the Arcane Labyrinth's "Sorcery" dungeon, Firion and his allies came across several Chimera Sphinxes artificially created by a mage researching how to amplify magical power. He doubled the magical abilities of the heroes and challenged them to take on his monstrous creations. After they defeated the Chimera Sphinxes, the mage revealed the key term "Soul" to the heroes.

NAME ORIGIN
The chimera was a fire-breathing monster with body parts from many different creatures. Common depictions include a lion's head, a goat's body and a serpent's tail. The horrible beast was defeated by Bellerophon with the help of the flying horse Pegasus. The name chimera comes from the Greek word khimaira which means "she-goat". Sphinxes were mythological creatures having the head of a man or another animal on the body of a lion in Egyptian mythology. A colossal recumbant stone figure of the sphinx which many think was meant to represent King Khafra is found close to the pyramids of Giza. The Sphinx in Greek mythology was a monster with the head and breast of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. The Sphinx sat on a rock outside of Thebes and proposed a riddle to travelers, killing them when they answered incorrectly. Until Oedipus arrived, no one answered her riddle correctly, and when Oedipus deduced the right answer, the Sphinx killed herself. The word comes from Greek and means "the strangler".
