PRONUNCIATION: KAY-os shrahyn
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: カオスのしんでん
NES NAME: Temple of Fiends
ORIGINS NAME: Temple of Chaos
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Chaos Shrine
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Chaos Shrine

The Chaos Shrine was a ruined temple north of the kingdom of Cornelia. Built as a focal point for the power of the four Crystals, the ancient Shrine was later used as a hideout for the evil knight Garland after he kidnapped Princess Sarah.
The Warriors of Light, acting on the pleas of the King of Cornelia, journeyed to the Shrine to rescue the Princess. They defeated Garland in combat, but he was resurrected by the Four Fiends and transported two thousand years into the past where he was reborn as the ultimate embodiment of evil, Chaos. After restoring the Crystals' light, the Warriors of Light used the Black Crystal in the Shrine's central chamber to travel back in time and finally defeat Garland.
Arriving in the past, the Warriors of Light battled through legions of monsters and reincarnated versions of the Four Fiends before coming face to face with Garland. He transformed into Chaos and battled the heroes in an epic showdown. In the end, good triumphed over evil, and Chaos was destroyed, restoring peace to the world.

GAME INFO
The Chaos Shrine is found to the north of Cornelia. After restoring the four Crystals, the passage to the ancient Chaos Shrine can be opened, however it is not possible to return back to the present time without the use of the Exit or Teleport spells or an Emergency Exit. This is the first and also final dungeon of the game.
The Labyrinth of Time is also accessed from the present Chaos Shrine in the Anniversary Edition. The mysterious hooded figure in Cornelia leads the player to a hidden area in the top section of the Chaos Shrine which leads to the Labyrinth.

NAME ORIGIN
Chaos was a Greek god, the personification of the disorder and formless matter said to exist before the universe. The word comes from the Greek word khaos, meaning "abyss". A shrine is a sacred place of religious devotion or commemoration. The word originally comes from the Latin word scrinium which means "case for books or papers".
In Final Fantasy Origins, this location was called the Temple of Chaos. A temple is a place dedicated to the worship of a deity. The word comes from the Latin word templum.
In the original NES release, this location was called the Temple of Fiends. A fiend is another name for an evil spirit or demon. The word comes from the Old English word feond.
