PRONUNCIATION: KAV-ern uhv urth
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: アースのどうくつ
NES NAME: Earth Cave

ORIGINS NAME: Terra Cavern
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Cavern of Earth
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Cavern of Earth

The Cavern of Earth was a vast underground cave on the Devil's Tail peninsula. Deep within its subterranean passages, the Earth Crystal shone brightly until the Lich drained it of its power, corrupting the land and allowing it to rot. A servant of the Lich, the Vampire, ransacked the nearby town of Melmond, destroying the Sanctuary and terrorizing the populace.
After arriving in the ruined Melmond, the Warriors of Light were begged by the townsfolk to destroy the Vampire, who they believed to be the source of the earth's decay. After slaying the Vampire, the heroes discovered a passage further into the Cavern, however it was blocked by a magical plate.
Visiting the wise sage Sadda, the Warriors received the Earth Rod which they used to open the passage and continue deeper underground where they discovered the Altar of Earth and the Lich. The Warriors of Light defeated the undead Fiend and restored the light of the Earth Crystal, allowing the land to flourish and grow green once again.

GAME INFO
The Cavern of Earth is found to the southeast of Melmond. After defeating the Vampire, the Star Ruby is used to open the Giant's Cave allowing access to the Sage's Cave where the Earth Rod is found. The Earth Rod opens up the final two floors of the Cavern where the Lich is fought.

NAME ORIGIN
A cavern is a large, mostly underground cave. The word comes from the Latin cavernus meaning "hollow". Earth is the name given to soil and dirt, the dry surface matter of our planet. The word comes from the Old English word eorthe.
In Final Fantasy Origins, this cave was called the Terra Cavern. Terra is Latin for "earth".
In the original NES release, this cave was simply named the Earth Cave.
