NAME ORIGIN
Catoblepas was the name given to a legendary Ethiopian beast, first described by the Roman philosopher Pliny the Elder. It was said to have the body of a buffalo and the head of a pig. Its body was covered in scales, and its large heavy head was always pointed downward. This was a good thing because legends claim that it had the ability to petrify and kill with its stare or breath. The word comes from the Greek word katobleps, which meant "to look downward".
