ORIGINS NAME: Castle Palamecia
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Castle Palamecia
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Castle Palamecia

Castle Palamecia was the seat of power of the Palamecian Empire. Located high atop a mountain range overlooking the Coliseum and the vast Palamecian Desert, it was from here that Emperor Mateus ruled over his evil empire. The impenetrable fortress could not be reached by foot, and was only entered twice by outsiders: once, by a brave adventurer using a hot air balloon to answer an ancient King of Palamecia's challenge to reach his daughter on the Castle's highest floor; and by the great theif Paul, who used a kite to sneak onto the Castle's roof.
After the Emperor was defeated by Firion, Maria, Guy and Ricard Highwind in the heart of the Cyclone, the Dark Knight usurped control and declared himself Emperor. In reality, the Dark Knight was Leon, Maria's brother who was lost in the escape from Fynn. Maria declared that she could save him, that he must be acting under the Emperor's spell, and the heroes set out for Castle Palamecia. Consulting with Paul about how to enter the Castle, they learned that Cid was gravely injured when the Cyclone attacked Poft. On his death bed, Cid granted the heroes use of his Airship, which they could use to land atop Castle Palamecia. They battled their way through the fortress until they arrived at the throne room. Leon challenged Firion to battle, but they were stopped by Maria. She pleaded with Leon to stop the senseless fighting, but they were interrupted by the appearance of Emperor Mateus. The evil warlord gained tremendous power in Hell after he was defeated by the heroes and came back from the dead to rule the world. Ricard challenged the Emperor, urging the heroes to escape with the newly hatched Wyvern. Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon climbed onto the Wyvern and escaped back to the Airship as Ricard charged into battle against the reborn Emperor. He was quickly slain and Mateus used his dark power to transform Castle Palamecia into Pandaemonium, the infernal palace of Hell.

GAME INFO
Castle Palamecia can only be entered by landing the Airship on its roof. It can only be explored one time, because after Emperor Mateus reappears, the entire Castle is transformed into Pandaemonium.

NAME ORIGIN
A castle is a fortified residence used by nobility in feudal times. The word comes from the Latin word castellum meaning "a fortified settlement". The use of Palamecia after Castle is common in naming practices outside of English, such as in French and Spanish, where the adjectives appear after the noun.
