FINAL FANTASY II :: LOCATIONS

PRONUNCIATION: KAS-uhl deest
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: Unknown
ORIGINS NAME: Deist Castle
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Castle Deist
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Castle Deist

    Presiding over a small lake, Castle Deist was once the home of the mighty Dragoons and their brave Wyverns on the island of Deist. However, the evil Emperor Mateus, fearing the power of the Dragoons, sent his agents to poison the Wyverns' water supply. With their allies slain, the Dragoons were quickly decimated by the Palamecian Empire's forces. Castle Deist was then abandoned.
    The King of Fynn urged Firion and his friends to travel to Deist to try and find any remaining Dragoons or Wyverns to aid them in their battle against the Empire. Instead, the heroes found a small boy, Kain, and his mother, Elina. Elina's husband, Phillip, was one of the last Dragoons killed by the Empire. The two remained behind in Castle Deist to care for the last surviving Wyvern, who was poisoned in the Empire's attack. However, she could not speak the Wyvern's language and asked the heroes to recover a Dragoon's Pendant from Deist Cavern to the north. With the Pendant, one could decipher the language of the Wyverns. Firion and his allies recovered a Pendant from the corpse of a fallen dragoon in the Cavern and brought it back to Castle Deist. The ailing Wyvern revealed the last hope for his race, an unhatched Wyvern Egg, which the dying dragon asked the heroes to submerge in the Life Spring at the bottom of Deist Cavern.
    After Firion and his allies battled through Deist Cavern, defeating the monstrous Chimeras, and leaving the Wyvern Egg in the Life Spring, the poisoned Wyvern perished. Shortly after its death, Elina and Kain chose to leave the ruined castle. Before leaving, Elina bequeathed the most treasured possession of the Dragoons to Firion: the powerful sword, Excalibur.

GAME INFO
    Castle Deist is found in the middle of the island of Deist, north of a small lake and south of the entrance to Deist Cavern.

NAME ORIGIN
    A castle is a fortified residence used by nobility in feudal times. The word comes from the Latin word castellum meaning "a fortified settlement". The use of Deist after Castle is common in naming practices outside of English, such as in French and Spanish, where the adjectives appear after the noun.
