NAME ORIGIN
Berserk comes from the Berserkers, ancient Norse warriors who dressed in bear or wolf skins and fought with frenzied rage in battle. They would howl like animals, foam at the mouth and bite the edges of their iron shields. It was believed their uncontrollable rage was brought on by hallucinogenic mushrooms, alcoholic beverages spiced with bog myrtle, drinking bear or wolf blood, or frenzied rituals where they believed they were being possessed by the spirit of a bear or a wolf. The word comes from the Old Norse bera meaning "bear" and serkr meaning "shirt" or "coat".
