The Automatons were mechanical beings created long ago to serve the ancestors of the Lufenians. After the collapse of Lufenian civilization at the hands of Tiamat, the Automatons fell into disrepair and many were found malfunctioning by the Warriors of Light. Automatons also tended to the challenges faced in the Labyrinth of Time.
A notable Automaton was spotted by Koppe near the Waterfall Cavern north of Onrac. It had left searching for its "master", holding the Warp Cube which opened the transporter to the Flying Fortress. The Warriors of Light retrieved the Warp Cube from the ancient robot and used it to journey to the Flying Fortress to finally defeat Tiamat.

NAME ORIGIN
An automaton is a mechanical figure which acts on its own power, such as a robot. The word is a Latin word meaning "self-operating machine".
The Automatons were called Robots in previous versions of Final Fantasy I. A robot is a machine which resembles a human and is capable of performing complex tasks on command or by being programmed in advance. The word comes from the Czech word robota meaning "compulsory labor" and was coined in the 1920 play R.U.R. by Karel Čapek.
