PRONUNCIATION: AL-tair
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: アルテア
ORIGINS NAME: Altair
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Altair
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Altair

Altair was a small, walled village south of the kingdom of Fynn. It was a remote town far from the power mongering Palamecian Empire. After the Empire invaded Fynn, the royal family and the soldiers of the Wild Rose Rebellion escaped to Altair where they set up their Rebel Hideout. Fleeing with the royal family were the princes of Kashuan, Gordon and Scott, as well as four orphaned youths named Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon. They were attacked by a cadre of Black Knights on the outskirts of Fynn, and awoke in Altair, guests of the Rebel army. Noticing that Leon was missing, Firion and the others approached Princess Hilda, acting as the leader of the Rebellion in place of her father who was wounded in their escape, believing Leon may be held captive in Fynn and asked to join the Rebel army, but she refused them believing this war to be too dangerous for the young orphans. The heroes decided to prove their valor by entering Fynn themselves, where they encountered the wounded Prince Scott in the basement of the Fynn Pub. They did not find Leon, but Scott entrusted his Ring to Firion, who brought it back to Hilda who allowed the heroes to join the Rebellion.
Firion and his friends returned several times to Altair, speaking with Hilda and the King of Fynn, before the Empire's titanic warship - the Dreadnought, attacked the town, killing many of the citizens who did not escape to the Rebel Hideout. Hilda begged the heroes to destroy the warship, which was docked north of Fynn for supplies. They sabotaged the Dreadnought's engine by overloading it with the mythic Sunfire, causing a huge explosion. Prince Gordon then assigned the heroes the duty of recruiting the Dragoons of Deist to the Rebel cause. However, Deist had already fallen to the Empire and the Dragoons were defeated in combat. Returning to Altair, Firion was seduced by Hilda, who revealed herself to be a Lamia Queen sent by the Empire. The heroes defeated the enchantress and discovered the real Hilda was held captive in the Coliseum deep within Palamecia. They rescued the Princess from the Empire's clutches and returned her to the safety of Altair. After this string of successes, the Rebellion decided to strike back and rescue the kingdom of Fynn. They left Altair and set up a Camp south of Fynn to coordinate their attack.
Shortly after Firion and his friends recovered the Ultima Tome from the Mysidian Tower, a powerful Cyclone summoned by Emperor Mateus ripped through the towns of Altair, Gatrea, Paloom and Poft. Completely obliterated by the intense storm, the ruined villages remained as reminders of the Empire's wrath.

GAME INFO
Altair is the first town and starting point of the game. After the Cyclone is unleashed, Altair, along with Paloom, Poft and Gatrea, is no longer able to be entered.

ADDITIONAL INFO
The peninsula directly south of Altair contains enemies from the Mysidia region, which are much more powerful than the enemies of the surrounding area at the beginning of the game.

NAME ORIGIN
Altair is the name of a very bright, variable double star in the constellation Aquila, approximately 15.7 light years from Earth. The name comes from the Arabic Al Nasr al Tair meaning "the Flying Eagle". It is also known as Alpha Aquilae.
