FINAL FANTASY II :: TRANSPORTATION :: AIRSHIPS

PRONUNCIATION: AIR-ship
ORIGINAL JAPANESE NAME: Unknown
ORIGINS NAME: Airship
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Airship
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Airship

The Airship was an amazing, flying craft built by the mechanical genius Cid. Utilizing the intense power of the magical Sunfire, Cid was able to send his craft flying through the skies. Formerly the captain of Fynn's Order of the White Knights, Cid gave up his rank, his family and his honor to build his creation. After leaving Fynn, he took up residence in the port town of Poft, offering transport to any of the towns scattered around the globe.
Firion and his friends first encountered Cid in the Poft Pub and often booked passage on his Airship. After the heroes journeyed to Kashuan Keep to recover some of the legendary Sunfire in order to destroy the Palamecian Empire's titanic warship, the Dreadnought, Princess Hilda of Fynn hired Cid to fly her to the Keep and meet with Firion and his allies. However, before reaching Kashuan, they were intercepted by the Dreadnought and imprisoned. The heroes followed the warship to the Empire's supply base north of Fynn. Battling through the imperial forces and sabotaging the Dreadnought's engines with the mythical Sunfire, they rescued Hilda and Cid and escaped on board the Airship. Cid dropped the heroes off back in Altair and returned to Poft, which had recently been ravaged by the Dreadnought's attack.
Shortly after Firion and his friends recovered the Ultima Tome from the Mysidian Tower, a powerful Cyclone summoned by Emperor Mateus ripped through the towns of Altair, Gatrea, Paloom and Poft. Cid managed to escape in his Airship but was gravely injured before making it to Fynn. Firion, Maria, Guy and Ricard met Cid again in Paul's House where the weakened inventor entrusted his Airship to the heroes. It was his dying wish for Firion and his allies to pilot the Airship in their battle against the Empire, and laying in Paul's bed, he quietly perished. The heroes honored his request, flying the Airship out of the ruins of Poft and sailing around the world in their quest to destroy the Empire and return peace to the land.

GAME INFO
The Airship can first be flown to different towns for a fee before the Cyclone attacks by speaking to Cid's Underling at the Poft Pub. The prices are as follows:
     • Bafsk - 100 Gil
     • Salamand - 200 Gil
     • Semitt Falls - 300 Gil
     • Kashuan - 400 Gil
     • Gatrea - 500 Gil
     • Fynn - 600 Gil
     • Altair - 700 Gil
After Cid lends the Airship to the heroes, it can be controlled by the player and flown anywhere in the world. The Airship moves four times faster than the normal speed of the player and is able to land on any patch of grass, but cannot land on forests, swamps, deserts or water. The only other location that can be landed on is Castle Palamecia, as this is the only way to enter the fortress. Random enemy encounters also do not occur while flying the Airship.
