ORIGINS NAME: Adamantoise
DAWN OF SOULS NAME: Adamantoise
ANNIVERSARY EDITION NAME: Adamantoise

The Adamantoise of the Snow Cavern was a large, hard-shelled turtle that acted as the guardian of the Goddess's Bell. Firion and his allies defeated the beligerent reptile, using the Antarctic Wind acquired in the Cavern to pierce its powerful shell, and claimed the magic chime which opened the doors of Kashuan Keep.
The heroes encountered these carapaced beasts again in their quest at Kashuan Keep and the monster-infested labyrinth beneath Castle Fynn, and also in the depths of Deist Cavern where an Adamantoise guarded a treasure chest containing the Knight's Armor.
Another Adamantoise inhabited the Aquifer of the Arcane Labyrinth, where it caused a stir of gossip around a local village. Firion and his friends slew this beast as well, and learned a new keyword from the man investigating these rumors.

NAME ORIGIN
Adamantoise is a combination of the words adamant and tortoise. Adamant was a mythical metal found in many old world mythologies. The Greeks claimed that it was the only metal that could affect the gods, and Cronus used a sickle fashioned out of adamant to castrate his father Uranus. In Roman mythology, the underworld prison of Tartarus was sealed with columns of solid adamant. Loki of Norse mythology was said to have been bound by adamantine chains. The word comes from the Greek word adamas meaning "untameable". A tortoise is a land-dwelling turtle of the family Testudinidae shielded from predator by a shell. The word comes from the Late Latin tartarucha meaning "of Tartarus (the underworld)" since the tortoise was regarded as an infernal animal. It may have also been influenced by the Latin tortus meaning "crooked, twisted".
